Who we are
mentalhealthcare.org.uk has been created by people who work at the Institute of Psychiatry – a research and teaching organisation that is part of King’s College London – and people who work at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust (SLaM). This NHS organisation runs the Maudsley Hospital and many other mental health services in south London.
The development of mentalhealthcare.org.uk is led by Professor Elizabeth Kuipers, head of the Department of Psychology at the Institute of Psychiatry and a consultant clinical psychologist in community mental health services run by SLaM. Her research focuses on psychosis and ways of supporting family members in their caring role. She was involved in developing family therapy for people with psychosis and she chaired the group responsible for the development of the updated National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE) guideline for schizophrenia, published in March 2009. She is now (in 2012) chairing the group responsible for the partial update of that guideline.
The charity Rethink Mental Illness works closely with researchers at the Institute of Psychiatry and supports mentalhealthcare.org.uk by sending a representative to an advisory panel that meets three times a year and discusses the development of the site. Other members of the advisory panel are researchers at the IoP and/or mental health professionals at SLaM.
Academics and mental health professionals who work at other organisations and collaborate with, or have links with, Institute of Psychiatry researchers, also contribute to the information on the site. The page People involved in creating this site lists everyone who has contributed.
