Can you take a friend or relative to CBT (cognitive behaviour therapy) for psychosis sessions?

Dr Emmanuelle Peters: You can, you can bring a family member, a relative, you can bring your care co-ordinator if you like – again, it’s very much according to the wishes of the person, and it can be very helpful having a relative there who can be helpful with the homeworks in between the sessions.  It’s helpful to have a care co-ordinator there who is then able to understand the person more and is then able to modify their own care of the person in line with some of the issues that are coming up in therapy, so it’s completely up to you but of course we will always check with the person that that is what they want and that the relative is not kind of imposing themselves on them but it’s very much according to the person’s wishes.

Again, whether or not the relative actively participates in the session is completely according to the person’s wishes.  It’s very much a collaborative process and you have to be flexible and go along with what’s best for the person in their particular circumstance.
