Does a diagnosis contribute towards discrimination and stigma?

I think they can do, certainly.  I think diagnoses are a mixed blessing for people really. There is an idea that there’s a kind of hierarchy of diagnosis – the worst being schizophrenia, and other things receiving less discrimination.  I think for some people, they like to have a term, this is a medical problem and at least now I understand what it is – it can be a relief, it can be useful. But for other people, they don’t find it useful, and they reject it or at least use a different term to describe their problems, in order to avoid stigma. So people, for example, who have been told they’ve got schizophrenia will say: I’ve had problems with depression.
