Rethink
Rethink is a charity that works to help everyone affected by severe mental illness recover a better quality of life and campaigns for change through greater awareness and understanding.
Rethink:
• runs support groups across the country for people who have mental health problems and for their families;
• produces up-to-date information about mental health, services and treatment, much of which is available free of charge on its website;
• runs mental health services, including employment and training schemes, housing, residential care, and support for carers.
The charity’s National Information and Advice Service is for people with mental health problems and their families, and is staffed by specialist advisors. The service can be accessed through Rethink’s general information line, 0845 456 0455, Monday to Friday from 10am to 2pm. Or you can email advice@rethink.org or write to Rethink National Information and Advice Service, 89 Albert Embankment, London SE1 7TP.
The Service produces factsheets about different subjects: you can find links to many of them on this website.
Rethink carries out research to understand more about mental illness, to help improve services, and to inform campaigns on behalf of people who have mental health problems and their families. Over the years, the charity has carried out different research projects in partnership with the Institute of Psychiatry, many of them focusing on the needs of family members and ways of challenging stigma and discrimination.
Now Rethink has teamed up with Mind, another mental health charity, to lead Time to Change, a campaign to end discrimination against people who have experience of mental health problems in England. The campaign is financially backed by the Big Lottery Fund and Comic Relief, and the Institute of Psychiatry is carrying out research to measure the success of the campaign.
Rethink started life as The National Schizophrenia Fellowship and changed its name in 2002. It is a membership charity and you can join by calling 0845 456 0455 or by visiting the Rethink website.
Members receive regular copies of Your Voice, a quarterly magazine for people affected by mental illness and their carers, including updates in the field of mental health, personal stories, features by experts, advice and news of campaigns.
